I finished a couple of commissioned pieces in the past month that I'm excited to share. The watercolor skull is for Bill Martin's solo record Skeletons on Vacation which will be released Sept 22nd. ((which sounds super effing amazing)) The painting is on Arches paper and is 16x16". Its different than other papers that I used and it might be hot pressed when I usually used cold pressed, but it was one of the larger watercolor paintings that Ive done and I really enjoyed doing it. Painting for a purpose other than for myself drives me to get shit done.
The second piece is a 16x24" I believe and acrylic on canvas. I started painting a lot more loose with my acrylics as of recently and it feels pretty good. I used to do these super tight lined detailed paintings outlined in ink. Although it was enjoyable it was incredibly tedious and I prefer the way I'm working with acrylics now. Im really just using my brushes for the background of the painting and then the figures are created with a pallete knife. That all started when I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get to sleep and I was feeling super anxious. I sat down at my work station and I think I still had acrylic paints out from the night before that I started to use. I don't even know where the pallete knife came from, I never even used them for anything but I figured id try messing around with it. I liked how it looked and have since refined my style with the knife but most of all I liked how you could get the same vibe from my acrylic paintings as my watercolors now when you really couldn't before. Before it looked like two styles of paintings by completely different artists. Its nice to tie everything together.
For the upcoming show in October at the Cavendish Gallery and Collective I will be showing a mixture of brand new acrylic paintings and watercolors. All are going to be slightly creepy which is exactly what I like to paint. I think for the gallery opening we will be doing a costume party which I believe will be on the first Friday of October. Ill share more when I know exactly whats happening!
